Title: Before You Pitch Investors, Read This

As an early-stage investor who reviews a high volume of startup pitches daily, I repeatedly see founders misjudge the right moment to seek funding. This article offers practical guidance on readiness and approach.

Fundraising reality: you’re unlikely to raise with only an idea
– In most cases, you can’t secure investment based solely on concept. Demonstrating traction and progress is essential.

Position yourself for the best terms
– Move the fundraising process forward as far as possible to secure favorable terms. Plan to start fundraising roughly six months before you anticipate needing capital.
– During this preparatory phase, minimize spending and conserve resources to maximize runway.

Fundraising is not a celebration; it’s a strategic move
– The startup ecosystem often glamorizes fundraising, but from an investor’s perspective, the core question is: what is the likelihood of the founder turning capital into a substantial return?

What investors want to see
– It’s not about credentials or grand claims. It’s about demonstrated traction.
– Build a minimal set of features that address a real, painful problem and get users to adopt them.
– Even a small user base (20–30 users) significantly strengthens a pitch compared to presenting only an impressive idea.

How much to raise and when
– Keep the requested amount aligned with a clear near-term milestone. A typical target is enough to reach the next milestone with about 10–12 months of burn runway.
– Asking for too much can complicate negotiations and reduce your leverage.

A concise blueprint for a credible raise
– Idea + large addressable market + early traction or proven viability → strong foundation for a fundraising sprint
